Aeration is a system, not a single machine. Every component affects the final dissolved oxygen level in your pond. Here is how the complete chain works — and what to check on your own farm.
1. Air source: the blower
The Roots blower delivers oil-free, pulse-free air at constant pressure. Position it in a dry, ventilated shelter above flood level. Install an intake filter and a pressure relief valve.
2. Main pipe
PVC or PE pipe carries air from the blower to the pond edge. Diameter matters: too small creates friction loss that starves the far end of the pond. A general guide: 50 mm pipe up to 100 m, 75 mm up to 250 m, 110 mm for longer runs. Slope the pipe slightly and add drain valves at low points.
3. Distributor and branch lines
A manifold splits the main air into branch lines running across the pond. Use ball valves on each branch so you can balance air between pond zones — deep zones need more air than shallow ones.
4. Microporous tubing: the business end
Fine-bubble tubing (20–30 µm) lays at the pond bottom in parallel rows. Self-sealing pores close when the blower stops, preventing silt ingress. Rows 6–10 m apart, suspended 5–15 cm above the bottom.
5. Accessories that complete the system
- Pressure gauge and air filter at the blower outlet
- Check valves per branch to stop water backflow
- Drain valves for condensate in cold climates
