In summer the pond water temperature is high, the day-night temperature difference is large, the temperature difference between upper and lower water is obvious, and water quality changes fast. When continuous high temperature occurs, farmed fish are under stronger environmental stress, their resistance drops, and disease outbreaks become very likely. During summer farming, pond management and fish disease prevention need attention to the following three points.
1. Feed scientifically to strengthen the fish's resistance.
- Increase the number of feeders to enlarge the feeding area and stop the fish crowding in one place to feed. For ponds deeper than 2 m, shorten the feeding time; each feeding should last 20-30 minutes.
- Follow the "fixed quality, fixed quantity, fixed time, fixed place" feeding rule, ensure feed quality, and supplement vitamins and trace elements to raise the fish's resistance.
- Regularly use hanging-bag and hanging-basket disinfection around the feeding area with copper sulphate, bleaching powder and other disinfectants/parasiticides to prevent pathogen infection.
2. Manage water quality to improve the farming environment.
- Regularly add fresh water in suitable amounts - generally add or exchange water once every 7-10 days, replacing no more than 25 cm each time and keeping the water level at 1.5-2 m. When adding fresh water, avoid stirring up the bottom mud.
- Run the roots blower frequently to promote exchange between upper and lower water layers or water circulation. Run it 2-3 hours at midday every day.
- Every 10-15 days, spread quicklime over the whole pond at 30-50 jin (15-25 kg) per mu to improve water quality; every 10-15 days use photosynthetic bacteria, Bacillus and other microbial preparations to improve the microbial ecology of the water. After applying microbial preparations, avoid applying medication.
- Lay more bottom nano aeration tubes and aeration discs so the pond has enough oxygen from top to bottom.
3. Keep the stocking density scientific and reasonable.
Stock fish according to the pond conditions, supporting facilities and technical level. Stock as thinly as possible, or use the method of catching the large and keeping the small before the hot season arrives. Do not use a whole-pond seine net to catch fish. In the hot season, use a lift net at the feeding platform to catch the large and release the small: this reduces the farming load, increases cash-flow efficiency, and reduces the impact on the fish, water quality and pond ecology.
